The Paper Negative
-
A Brief History of Alchemical and Optical Breakthroughs
When visiting the University of Huddersfield, Rachel Louise Brown provided Photography students with an informative talk exploring the Paper Negative. Brown educated the group about the first negative positive process and how this enabled an image to be produced. The Camera Obsucra was needed in order to gain digital cameras which have evolved drastically since the Motzi, pinhole camera made in early 400BC. Da Vinci drew over 270 designs over 100 years and later within the 15th Century,
Since she is no longer working for Harper Bazaar, Brown fell back in love with photography as a creative practice rather than the commercial work she was so used to shooting. At the time of her visit, Rachel Brown had recently curated a brief series of self-portraits that express her identity as an individual and had us experiment within the dark room creating our own work.
The overall process was incredibly informative and an interesting approach that allowed us to experiment with ongoing work.
