Son: Nought to Nine
“I started making pictures when Sebastian was upset of unhappy, then I realised this is not who he is” (Finn, 2022).
A personal project by Matthew Finn that explores the upbringing of his first-born son as he represents visions of a photographer weighed down by his own personal understanding regarding the visual histories of children within art photography. How to photograph a baby, a young boy and then a child with independent thought?
Finn discovered the relationship between photographer and subject, whilst approaching life as a new parent, within a father/son dynamic. Matthew has to learn that when your child says no, it is scared and should not be broken even for a photographic opportunity, despite the desire as a creative to achieve the shot.
With the hopes to collaborate with his son in the near future, the current work provides and insight on what both him and his son wish to say.
The work primarily consists of black and white photographs, sharing the journey of his son’s childhood between the ages nine months to nine years. Documenting the family dynamics, Finn’s series includes a variety of concepts that I will consider incorporating within my own practice.
