Documentary Photographer, Marc Wilson recently attending the University of Huddersfield to provide BA (Hons) Photography students with an interesting insight as a freelance, documentary photographer. He began his talk, by asking who we think the photographs in which we take are for – ourselves, viewers, or those within the photograph. Sharing a story of someone’s life requires a photographer to be careful and aware that the most important person when documenting is that whom the story is about.
After originally studying sociology at Edinburgh University, Wilson undertook a second degree in photography for a year, prior to transferring to London, feeling the need to take a year away from studying. Wilson never felt the desire to work within a commercial field and after later finishing his MA, Wilson yearned to fund the creative freedom he had experienced during his MA. Self-set deadlines, people who fund work or provide clients, this freedom at first a little overwhelming provided Wilson with the confidence to create personal work that would provide him with the career he desired as a photographer. Working for 10 years as an interior photographer, bide him the time to create personal work alongside. Within these 10 years, Wilson created 2 Photographic Projects resulting in Photobooks.
When making a whole body of work, Marc finds it important that the photographs compliment one another, considering the process and the why’s and how’s that contribute to the finished product.
His series, entitled “The Last Stand” was created between 2010 and 2014 and during this time, Wilson travelled around European coastlines focusing on Second World War military bases. The methodology behind this work encapsulates the walk Wilson took to and around the subject, until Wilson felt he’d found the right composition. Wilson would often revisit on overcast days to incorporate more subdued and softer grey lighting that compliments the mood…
