When visiting the city centre of Leeds as a group, we attended a variety of Art Museums, Galleries and Exhibitions consisting of a variety of work.
Walking from the train station to The Tetley Art Gallery we noticed that there were very little exhibitions currently on, therefore researched places further afield in order to gain more research. Beth Shapeero: The Shape of Things 19 November 2021 – 6 March 2022 is a collaboration consisting of 10 emerging artists.
The exhibition space incorporated 8 rooms, each involving different artists. I was particularly drawn to the photographic exhibitions and how they were positioned on the wall. The use of monochrome against the woodwork stood out and complimented the work successfully.
We then visited the Henry Moore Institute, which had very little to offer. Again, the photography was printed in black and white at a small scale and each image presented in a black squared frame. The exhibition space also incorporated archival material displayed on a plinth.
Leeds Art Gallery was my most preferred Gallery as it had multiple elements of artistic medium. Paintings, sculptures, and photography exhibited within a variety of large rooms consisting of light and appropriate colour. I took from this inspiration in regard to presenting my own work within an exhibition space.
After visiting the Art Gallery, we looked around the Leeds Institute City Museum. The photographic exhibition was an interesting take on the recent Covid-19 Pandemic. The corridor walls were painted pink and contrasted perfectly with the NHS staff’s uniforms. Quotes from staff who worked on the Covid Wards surrounded honest portraits. This exhibition was interactive and required the participation of the audience, something which I am personally not a fan of as I feel it devalues the artist’s work.
Lastly, we visited Village Books, a single floor shop that sells emerging photographer’s work. Despite only being small, the shop displayed a vast number of photobooks consisting of all types of mediums. The room had a divider that exhibited a current artists work, this element created a community feel within the shop and was an exciting discovery.
