“Don’t restrict yourself to just freelancing”.
After Carlotta Cardana finished her first degree, she felt a strong desire to become a photographer and moved back to her hometown, Milan in order to do so. Beginning as a wedding photographer, she understood the importance of storytelling and chose to show the narrative behind her work through documentary. When in Argentina, Cardana chose to photograph the public, and how they had to reinvent themselves after an economic crash throughout the early 2000’s. Photographing factories and rebuilds, Cardana create reportages, working on storied abroad and researching individual experiences. She was particularly interested in the experience of garbage collectors who sell their finds to recycling factories that would sperate items into different categories and gain profit. Carlotta tried pitching this story to local magazines, but Argentina was too far from Milan and felt unconnected.
After this blow, Carlotta moved to Mexico City and fell in love with Latin America. Starting appointments with magazines, she found a new desire to become a portrait photographer, for Music Magazine, which consisted of fashion shoots and photographing live gigs. Despite initially shooting on film, Cardana soon discovered digital photography whilst practicing within this field and although her graduate school supplied and encouraged the use of digital cameras, Cardana much preferred the authenticity of film. Fed up with Europe, Carlotta then moved to London to create stronger editorial portraits, on film in locations she did not know….
